After a short time, the plastic "wings" on the connector bend slightly, making one of the contacts not mate properly. The speaker part of this item is fine. The slide-on electrical connector is poorly engineered. This electrical connector is far to complicated and delicate for anything but occosional use. Shame, Garmin.
I had bought this chord in October and have used it about 6 times now. Am having problems with the chord in that I have to jiggle the chord for my unit to come on. Not exactly what I expect from the product after having paid this much.
The original cord on my Street Pilot 2640 began to give me problems after about 2 yrs. When I would go over a bump the Street Pilot would reset due to a break where the cord attached to the connector at the back of the GPS receiver. The new cord may develop the same problem (it appears to be identical to the original except that it is a couple of feet longer) but it solves the problem for now.
The fact that every person looking at this Garmin speaker adapter is here to buy a replacement for their broken part is surely testament to an inherent design flaw. Trying to get all the bits back together was a challenge. The fact that the part costs so much just adds insult to injury imho. I had tried to tape the tip back on for a while to delay purchasing a new one, but eventually that failed. If you do manage to find all the pieces when yours breaks (and it will break) , I think the reviewer who recommended going to radio shack or an auto parts store and buying a "y" adaptor is on to a great Macgyver fix. I'll be trying this out myself rather than purchasing a new one.
The seller was right, it was exactly what I needed. I don't think I should have needed this replacement if Garmin did the right thing. I like my Garmin but this was a week link(cord) in the product. This seller was A++++.Dan
